Message from Chairman, Mark Pearson: In the bad weather that occurred on Tuesday 30th June, it has come to our attention that some teams applied pressure on the opposition to play when the courts were deemed to be unfit. The specific cases are being reviewed by the league committee but in the meantime it is perhaps a good idea to remind clubs of the rules surrounding poor weather. These are covered in rule 6 of the Competition Rules (page 29 of the handbook). There is more detail in the rules, but the key points are: “If in the opinion of either captain, the courts are unfit for play the match is abandoned.” If there is disagreement on this, “…all players must wait 20 minutes before the match is declared abandoned, unless both captains agree otherwise.” The rule goes on to state that “It is not expected that play shall continue in the rain.” although, of course, captains may agree to play in the rain.
Clubs should ensure that all their team captains are aware of these rules.
Whilst it can be frustrating to have a match abandoned when it is one you would be expecting to win, it is important to consider player safety. If both captains agree to play, that is acceptable, but do be respectful of the opposition if they are not wanting to play.
Markland Hill Ladies B team: Having failed to field a team three times. They will now be deleted from the league and results expunged. Government Rule 12.
